I have been involved in playing and researching soul music for most of my adult life. Djing in clubs, on radio and collecting soul music in all formats.
DJ’d at many of the country’s leading soul music events, Yate Allnighters, Wigan Casino, London’s, 100 Club. I also started my first event promotions, with sucessful promotions at the Stroud Subscription Rooms and later the highly aclaimed nights at Gloucester’s, Wheelwrights Club in the old cattle market. Made my first trips to the U.S., to major music cities, Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, Miami.
At the beginning of the decade I started promoting and running the now legendary Top Of The World Allnighters, Stafford. This brought together many of the country’s leading soul DJ’s under one banner, the venue ran for over five years. During this time I was able to bring over to the UK many major soul music artists, Gene Chandler, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Richard Wylie, Eddie Parker, Eddie Holman to name a few. In the mid 80’s I made my first foray into radio, doing a weekly show on the London pirate station Soul 24/7, that later evolved into the internationally aclaimed Solar Radio.
Continued Djing all over the UK at major clubs and weekenders, Manchester Ritz, Cleethorpes, Blackpool. Started a new promotion in The Midlands at the Bretby Country Club, which continued the the essence of the Stafford event. Again bringing together the best soul DJ’s in the counrty to play at one event. During this time I also started writing music artical for major black music publications, Black Echoes and the Gloucester based Manifesto magazine.
Djing all around the world, U.S.A., Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway as well the U.K’s major clubs, The Ritz, Ministry Of Sound. Continued my music writing in magazines, internet blogs. Now spend 2-3 months a year in the U.S. with artists and musicians finding and collecting recordings and the stories that go with them. 3 years ago I help start the internationally listened to Sunday morning soul DJ and music show on Solar Radio, ‘Soul People’.
I have worked for several international companies, holding directorships in Sales & marketing. Responsibilities have included, international sales teams, manufacturing sites, marketing departments, HR functions, dealership management. Today I run a internationally renown soul music sales company, Top Dog Records. This specialises in harder to find vinyl sales, music promotion and music licencing.
Dave will be bringing us his personal soul selections from 4 decades of the music he loves, ‘From the hard to find, Too the just plain good’.
Dave spends months each year traveling round the U.S.A., meeting, current and old artists, musicians, producers and DJ’s, listening to their stories and the music they have been involved in. Through the show he will share some of this with the listeners. It is hoped to develope this into a regular format, with music, stories, guests and music people interviews.
