The city council spends £1 million a year keeping Gloucester clean.
“In the current economic climate that is money that could be better spent if the thoughtless minority that drop litter acted more responsibly. I am delighted that the police are supporting us in this campaign.” (Councillor Steve Morgan)
Chris Jackson, from Gloucestershire police, said: “Litter dropping is often raised as a real concern by members of the community so this will be a very powerful tool in our armoury. “Our officers are trained and ready to go so I hope litter droppers will think twice, we will not tolerate it.”
Officers have teamed up with the city council in a “zero tolerance” approach in Gloucester. Discarded chewing gum, crisp packets, cigarette butts, dog mess all litter parts of the city. Instant on-the-spot fines of £80 are being dished out for people who are spotted dropping litter.
