POLICE — Do NOT drive unless it’s necessary
With surfaces still very wet from yesterday and temperatures extremely low (one local weather station in Tuffley is presently recording just below minus 9 at 6-30) conditions are extremely hazzardous. Equally the breeze and resulting wind-chill of minus 12 pose a threat to health if not appropriately dressed for these conditions.
Last night police asked people not to get behind the wheel unless it is absolutely necessary. All major roads should have been gritted, however, there will be other routes which are not. Also the large amount of water about combined with the very low temperatures will reduce the effectiveness of the gritting.
Nationally the picture is the same.
On Saturday, Jon Caudwell, from the Highways Agency, said they were doing their best to keep major roads in England clear but needed help from motorists who should “really seriously consider” whether they needed to go out.
He said he was surprised at the level of traffic on the roads, given the advice not to travel. He said in some areas abandoned vehicles and jack-knifed lorries had blocked access for gritters.
All main airports are still affected with Heathrow still facing major disruption, please check before you travel.
The safest thing, for yourself and other people including the emergency crews trying to get about their business, is to stay in, if you can.
BUT — Please don’t forget to check on any vulnerable people nearby to see if they are OK
