Smashing The Stereotype (of School Cooks)

Sarah Witt [47] has made it into the regional final of the School Chef of the Year award 2011.
Now, she hopes to beat off the competition by cooking up a treat and smashing the stereotype on behalf of cooks in Gloucestershire. Sarah works in the kitchen at St Peter’s Primary School in Gloucester,

“We CAN actually cook” she states
As a part time worker for Slimming World she also has a healthy knowledge of nutrition and energy, this is combined with her skills at knowing what the children like. Her preparation for the meal included a questionnaire and tasting sessions.
She will be serving chicken with a tomato coulis rolled up very tight with spinach and cheese accompanied by carrots & broccoli, popular with the children
“And for desert, I’ve chosen a strawberry layered cheesecake.” Sarah Witt said.
Her mentor, Caroline, was full of praise for Sarah and said she was a strong contender for the title. Caroline also works for theCouncil’s contract caterer Edward & Ward. In 2008 the title was won by Brimscombe School chef Sonia Reynolds.

About The Competition
The competition recognises “talented front line staff in schools not only prepare tasty, highly creative dishes to tempt the taste buds of discerning children and young people but also nutritious school meals that can make a major contribution towards altering eating habits, improving diets and decreasing obesity levels.”
The competition has grown over the years into a significant, highly professional and widely respected annual event and all participants, not just the winners, have achieved wide recognition and kudos within their authorities, schools and local communities
