I taught myself how to mix 14 years ago aged 8 using a standard Sony stereo deck (no pitch), Aiki Stereo deck and a 3-channel microphone mixer. I fist learnt how to mix using hip hop and drum n bass records. I quickly worked out that pretty much any 2 hip hop and dnb tune can mix together (dnb is 2x hh speed). This was a great help to me and before long I took full advantage of my 3 mic channels by adding another deck. 3 decks later… and I started to buy the music I grew up on.
Reggae / Ragga played a big part of my musical upbringing. Artists in this genre of music are always trying something new and will use anything. That was the same mentality I picked up for mixing. Using 3 decks I would make my own remixes and mega mixes. Friends with the same love for all aspects of music like me came together and we formed ‘Shatta Crew’. We preformed up and down the UK at all types of events. At the time I was playing ragga / ragga hip hop remixes and was just starting to get good venues / slots. Speed Garage was turning into 2step and the girls loved it, so that was the crowd I wanted to play to.
‘Call it fate or what you want’, but I had nearly all my records stolen and rather than try and rebuild my previous collection, I started fresh with Garage. I haven’t stopped playing it since.
