A 61-year-old Gloucester man had been found on the pavement suffering from head and face injuries in Wellington Street.
He is now in hospital where his condition is said to be serious. Officers were called to the scene in Wellington Street by an ambulance crew just after 5am and the road was closed while police conduced enquiries.
A 48-year-old man from Gloucester has been arrested on suspicion of ABH in connection with the incident.
