Councillors debated two petitions from the public at a meeting of the full county council for the first time today. (19/01/2011) The petitions related to libraries and waste and will play an important part in the ongoing consultation process. Both petitions had a half-hour debate under new legislation introduced last year.
Background info:-
New rules were agreed on the 23rd. June 2010, with the scheme being supported by all parties. One result of this is that all petitions with over 5,000 signatures will have a 15 minute debate at the meeting of the full council. The organiser of the debate will be given the opportunity to present the petition. This scheme will give the local community even more involvement in the decision making process.
For full details of the scheme please read the press release from June last year–>GCC Petitions Press Release
