‘Get It Swept’ is Fire Service message after rise in chimney fires
After an increase in chimney fires across the county, Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service is asking people to get their chimneys swept to prevent fire from striking their home.
In the last week alone, the Service has attended 22 chimney fires. The current cold snap means that more fires are being lit, but some people are failing to ensure their chimney has been swept properly.
Chief Fire Officer, Chris Griffin, said: “Each year, Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service attends many chimney fires, nearly 300 last year, and we go to great lengths to tell people about the dangers of these fires and how they can be prevented.
“Each of these incidents had the potential to threaten life and property and used up significant Fire Service resources. It’s extremely frustrating as these fires are so easy to prevent. We urge the owners of open fires and wood burners to have their chimneys traditionally swept at least twice a year.”
Flues should be swept and inspected to make sure they are in good condition. This will prevent a build up of flammable materials inside the flue and ensure that the flue is clear, providing adequate ventilation to the fire and preventing a build-up of potentially deadly carbon monoxide gas. It is also a good idea to use a spark guard if the fire is left unattended, even for a short time.
Cllr Will Windsor-Clive, Gloucestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Youth, said: “Please think carefully before lighting your fire. Is it safe, has it been swept? If not, get it done now so you can sit back and enjoy the warmth, knowing you home won’t be at risk from a chimney fire.”
