Gloucester FM (GFM) has received the long awaited news that its new broadcast frequency will be 96.6FM.

GFM will commence full time broadcasting from Friday July 21 2006. The previous Restrictive Service License (RSL) Broadcasts were on a different frequency due to regulations set out by the governing body Ofcom.

The station will continue to play Music of Black Origin and provide Music, News, Information and Advice to the community of Gloucester, but instead of the normal 28 day RSL broadcasts will continue 24/7, 365 when we begin a new tier in radio broadcasting as one of the first community radio stations awarded a full time license in the UK.

GFM is an example of the multi cultural city of Gloucester and reflects this through its “Family” of volunteers who give up their time for free to entertain and educate its listeners.

Vice Chair, John Mustoe said “I see this as a fantastic opportunity for our city. The feedback and response from the public over the last five years of RSL broadcasts has grown and grown. During our last broadcast we received 2.2 million hits on our website over the 28 days we were on air. There has been such an outcry from our listeners when we come off air in previous years. Thankfully that is all over and the wait for what has been a long term goal for the committee, volunteers and listeners of GFM to become a full time station is almost upon us, I can’t wait!”

Voluntary music programme presenters and volunteers required for 'The Community Link Show'

Gloucester FM (GFM) Community radio station is in the process of preparing for the start of it’s full time community radio broadcast that will commence this summer to co-inside with the Gloucester Festival and Jamaican independence celebrations, subject to frequency clearance from Ofcom.

There were 194 application submitted to Ofcom for a full time community radio license, GFM was one of the first 61 community radio stations in the UK awarded a license in November 2005.  The license is for 5 years and means GFM can broadcast it’s unique blend of music, news, information and advice 24/7 365.

The station plays various genres of music of black origin and is currently preparing and submitting applications for funds, and is seeking sponsorship to enable it to purchase a new broadcasting equipment and to upgrade it’s IT equipment. The purchase of the studio equipment will free up the existing studio to become the permanent training studio.

GFM is also seeking new voluntary presenters and volunteers to join the community link crew.  The station is particular keen to offer opportunities to voluntary presenters who are unemployed. However, those applying should be prepared to attend GFM’s 5 day accredited radio production training course.  If you are from the age of 16 and you would like to be to be part of the community link crew please write to Carol Francis at The Trust Centre, Conduit Street, Gloucester GL1 4XH and include information about your self and your contact details.

GFM is also aiming to widen the genre of black music that it currently plays, if there is a particular type of black music that you would like to hear on GFM, please email admin@gloucesterfm.com or write to Gloucester FM and let them know the genre of black music that you would like to hear on GFM

If you think you’ve got what it takes to present a show on GFM, please send your demo to: Gloucester FM, The Trust Centre, Conduit Street, Gloucester, GL1 4XH, or telephone John Mustoe on 07870 199 583.

Gloucester FM awarded full time license.

GFM received the news it has been waiting for since submitting its full time license application to Ofcom in November 2004 on Thursday 10 November 2005. Ofcom has awarded GFM a full time access license to broadcast, music, news, information and advice to the community.

“Chairperson Derrick Francis said, I am abolsetly delighted, we have all been working toward this moment. I’m ecstatic not just for the presenters, volunteers and the board but also for the community, because without their support we might not have carried on after our equipment was stolen, there are so many people to thank for helping to make this possible and I know will probably miss someone out, so please accept my apologies if I do.

Nonetheless, I must thank Errol Johnson for the wise words, Shirley Palmer, Keith Annis, The Barton and Tredworth Community Trust for taking the risk when no one on else would, Evadney Campbell MBE former BBC Radio Gloucestershire presenter for coming to our rescue and training the community link crew for the first broadcast, Jonathan Magee for the help and guidance, Lincoln Financial Group and Community Counts for the donations to purchase the new studio equipment when we had our equipment stolen. I must also thank Simme Ranks, Tony Johnson, Carol Francis, John Mustoe and Daddy G for the hard work and commitment and for sharing the vision of a community radio station when we started the journey.

Finally, I must say a special, special thank you to all of GFM’s volunteers and presenters past and present and everyone of the community who have emailed, phoned, or texted us whilst we are on and off air to offer support “

With the people for the people, GFM serving the community is the aim, GFM will now embark on preparing for the launch of the full time broadcast, which is envisaged will commence in 2006 and welcomes financial donations, or support in kind from local business or organisation.
