Presenters Name
Steve Aspey
Show Title / Genre
Rhythm & Business
Soul music from a different perspective, past, present &
future, with more than a nod of the head to the leftside.
Interests & Hobbies
Red wine (the consumption of), seeing how many records I can get in my loft before the ceiling collapses.
Musical Background / History
Began DJing back in 1978. Was inspired by the likes of Soul Mafia DJ’s such as Chris Hill, Jeff Young, Chris Brown etc but also local guys, Steve Breiton and Bryn at the Night Owl in Chelt, Ian Richards and Joey Coyne at Eve’s and a little later by GFM’s very own Jerry Hipkiss. They all played the best music of the time and being the other side of the decks really appealed to me. Shout to Mark West.
Started doing mobiles, moved into clubs after about 2 years and began running soul & funk nights in Oxford. Moved back to Cheltenham and began Soul Mine at Gas in about 1990 with Gerry. Since then been keeping my head down doing all manner of nights and still at it to this day though everybody seems so much younger these days. Love doing the specialist gigs when ever I can
How did you get involved in GFM?
Did 4 broadcasts back in the summer of 2004 but was unable at the time to commit further. However, I loved it and vowed to give it another crack in the future….so here I am.
Achievements
Well, I have 3 children and although it wasn’t actually me that give birth to them I would say they are my most major achievement. I did once win a tenner on the lottery.
Musical Aspirations
To keep playing the music that I’m feeling. And if it’s to an audience then that’s a bonus.
Most influential tracks
Not so much influential as stone cold favourites (subject to change at the drop of a hat)
The Four Tops – Love Makes You Human
Mike Francis – Features of Love
Stairsteps – Throwin Stones Atcha
Lonnie Liston Smith – Space Princess
Miles Davis – Milestones
