“We’re doing something funny for money!” Thats the message from our community minded Council Staff
Gloucestershire County Council staff are planning a variety of fundraising events to raise money for Red Nose Day this week – and the Council Leader and Chief Executive are doing their bit too!
Mark Hawthorne, leader of the county council, has decided to get his hands dirty by taking on a new role for charity.
He has agreed to be ‘auctioned off’ to one of three teams and staff are being asked to donate money to vote for which team they’d like to see Mark working with; Shire Hall’s maintenance team, the in-house caterers or with a pothole gang. Whichever option raises the most cash will win.
Mark said: “Staff all across the council are doing their bit to raise money and I felt it was only fair to get involved too.
“I’m looking forward to my challenge, whichever options raises the most cash and if we get to £500 I’ll even have a go at all three.”
Business Service Centre staff have decided to organise a sponsored leg-waxing session.
If they raise £100, Will Caton has agreed to bare his legs for waxing and if they get to £150 his colleague Courtney Samms has also agreed to take part.
Not one to miss out on all the fun, chief executive of the county council Peter Bungard, has agreed to have his legs waxed if £500 in sponsorship can be raised.
Peter said: “I am always up for a challenge and thought it only fair that I should share Will and Courtney’s pain by volunteering to have my legs waxed, but for a price.
“I’m very proud of the way that staff have come up with lots of different ideas to raise money for a great cause.”
The council’s Climate Champions and any willing passers-by will be getting involved in a ‘Red Nose Relay’.
Volunteers will walk up and down the stairs from the council landing, handing the baton on to the next enthusiastic participant.
The Champions are asking staff to join them to keep the walking relay going for as long as possible over lunchtime and to make a donation.
The council’s Media & PR Team will also be on a baking frenzy for their cake sale on Thursday morning to raise funds for the cause.
Gloucestershire Highways and Environment staff will be taking on a Rest of GCC XI in a charity football match.
Kick off will be at 1:15pm on Sunday 20th March at Plock Court. Players will contribute £3 each and spectators £1 each.
Pete Bungard added: “I’m a great fan of Comic Relief, and am always overwhelmed by the efforts that our staff and partners put in to fundraising throughout the year for important charities.
“This football match between Gloucestershire Highways and our Environment staff is just one example of many, and I really hope the teams have a great time in their commitment to this fantastic cause – but no broken legs please, we’ve got services to run next week!”
