Council Gritters Out Clearing Roads Overnight

Roads across Gloucestershire are faring well this morning after gritting teams were out clearing ice and snow overnight.

Gloucestershire County Council’s highways teams were out from midnight ploughing snow from the roads and laying grit to prevent ice from forming. A complete run of the primary network – all A and B roads – started at 4am and was completed just ahead of the morning rush hour to ensure people could get to work safely. Extra ploughing and grit treatments took place on the A46 at Cooper’s Hill and at Frocester Hill as these areas had been badly hit over the past week.

Fortunately, snowfall was not as heavy as predicted so the teams that were out were able to shift a lot of the existing snow from the roads and across the county roads are moving well this morning. Light snow showers are possible today, but forecasters believe the worst of the weather has passed Gloucestershire now with the next few days looking brighter.

Temperatures will remain below freezing today and the teams will be out treating secondary routes – those leading to main roads and bus routes. Gritters have been out treating both park and ride routes in Cheltenham and Gloucester and the services are running as normal.

Cllr Stan Waddington, cabinet member for environment, said: “Our teams have been working extremely hard overnight to ensure that people can drive to work safely this morning. “So far, traffic is moving very well and we’ve had no significant problems.

“However, temperatures are still very low so there will be some ice and snow around and people should continue to drive carefully and ensure they wear the correct footwear if they’re out walking.”
