THE gloves are off in the fight to find a new home for Tredworth Amateur Boxing Club. They were left homeless when the India House in Barton Street closed. The club has been in existence since 1947, and Jason Cook who presently runs the club says that they are “Gutted”
Classes were run four nights a week in the pub’s function room, with Wednesday night being a ‘children’s night’ where youngsters aged between 9-14 went along to get coaching.
Keith Ryder, from Cam, has been chairman of the boxing club for the past five years. He said they now face a dilemma in that they have been told to remove all of the equipment by the weekend. If anyone can help the boxing club store its ring (which can be taken apart), weights, punch bags and other equipment they should call Mr Ryder on 01453 542 108.
Gloucester City Councillor Usman Bhaimia said that he understood theat there were a lot of up & coming young boxers there. He added that it was a sad loss & so was the closure of the pub which will affect the community spirit in the area.
Jason commented that they get adults and children here, we’ve also got a couple of lads with Asperger’s Syndrome, and their parents say the boxing club has turned their sons’ lives around.”
