Bernard Westcarr, a respected elder in the Gloucester BME Community has taken part in a BBC documentary which runs from Monday 28th. March until the 1st. of April. The programme in which he appears is on Wednesday 30th. March at 9-15
The documentary “Making Britain Count” is looking at how Britain has changed over the last 100 years. Each episode will focus on two decades from 1901 to the present day There are 5 main themes in the series, family life,education, work, immigration and gender.
Born in Brown’s Hall, St Catherine in Jamaica, Bernard Westcarr came to England in 1960 on a direct BOAC flight. His reasons were two-fold – to visit his parents who were already here and to study for an agricultural degree. He aimed to return to Jamaica within four years.
Bernard has always been active in the life of the community, involving himself in a wide range of activities benefitting not only his fellow countrymen and families but also the wider society.
In 1978 Bernard was appointed a Justice of the Peace, the first JP from the Black community in Gloucester.
